Ti Ascent 7mm SAUM

The Ti-Ascent is built on a custom Lone Peak Razor-Ti titanium action mated to a Proof Research carbon Sendero profile barrel. This rifle is custom chambered in 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum (7mm SAUM) by a renowned gunsmith. 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum (7mm RSAUM or SAUM) is probably my favorite all around cartridge for extended long range shooting and hunting. It’s a favorite amongst F-Class competitiors and 1000-yard bench rest shooters because the short-fat case is highly efficient, and known to produce low velocity spreads. It looks like a scaled up 6.5 x 47 Lapua, but is capable of sending 175 – 180 grain bullets at 2900+ fps in hunting length barrels, similar performance to the 7mm Remington Magnum in a more compact package. 

We build all of our 7mm SAUM’s on custom, titanium medium-length actions in order to allow high BC bullets to be seated long and maximize case capacity. The medium length actions will feed and hold loaded rounds up to 3.2″ in total length, more than .3″ longer than a standard short action. Our barrels are also custom chambered for the longer high-BC bullets.

This particular rifle is a sweetheart to shoot and routinely shoots 3-shots in 3/8″ if I do my part. The Hornady 175 grain ELDX’s we’re running in this rifle have an outstanding BC to resist wind drift and carry lethal velocity to extended ranges.

7 SAUM is a great choice for medium to large game from antelope to elk and even moose. It’s a good choice for African plains game as well. This is the cartridge I almost always recommend first to my closest friends that I build rifles for and is what I personally use for hunting and ELR competition.

The SAUM doesn’t match the 28 Nosler in performance. It’s about 200 fps slower with the same bullet. However, the SAUM is much lighter recoiling and delivers about 93.5% of the velocity with a 24″ barrel, and uses about 26% less powder! All that extra boom-sauce makes the 28 Nosler much harder on the barrel and the increased recoil is more difficult to control and shoot accurately. You really need at least a 26″ barrel if not a 28″ barrel to take advantage of the 28 Nosler’s huge case capacity. The 28 is an awesome round, but it’s more than most shooters can consistently manage.
